GREENVILLE, N.C. --- UAB completed a three-game Conference USA series sweep of East Carolina with an 8-2 win here Sunday.
The loss drops ECU to 19-11 overall and 1-5 in league play, while UAB improves to 18-7 and 5-1 in conference.
UAB chased ECU starting pitcher Keli Harrell (10-8) from the game after scoring five runs in the first inning.
With the bases loaded, UAB third baseman Nicole Whitlock singled up the middle to plate the first run of the frame. Leigh Walker was then hit by a pitch to drive in another run before Kayla Harris cleared the bases with a two-out base hit to centerfield. Harris was tagged out in a rundown to end the inning.
The Blazers extended their lead to 7-0 by adding a pair of runs in the third as Jacy Leon and Lindsay Stanley each drove in a run with a single.
UAB starter Jennifer Nelson (8-1) limited the Pirates to just four hits, while striking out nine in a complete-game effort.
ECU used three pitchers with senior Stephanie Hayes tossing 1.2 innings of relief and freshman Brooke Swann throwing the final 4.2 innings.
The Pirates scored a single run in the third and seventh inning, both courtesy of UAB miscues, to determine the final margin.
Erin St. Ledger collected two of the Pirates' four hits with Paige Baggett and Sarah Bibee plating their two runs.
ECU returns to action Wednesday against NC State. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the ECU Softball Field.
