
Pirates Sit In 16th Place At Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. - The East Carolina men's golf team posted a first round score of 310 and currently sit in 16th place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C. The tournament, which is co-hosted by ECU and Indiana University, is being played on the par-72, 7,035-yard Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 course.
The Pirates were unable to handle to tough conditions at Pinehurst, placing two golfers in the top-50 through 18 holes. Martin Nicholls leads ECU with a first round score of 76 (t-37) while David Smith's five-over par 77 ranks him tied for 45th. Other Pirates that are participating in the event are Chris Ault (t-52), Andre Thorsen (t-62) and Robin Smith (t-67).
"It was a very difficult first round for the team," said interim head coach Kevin Miller. "I was disappointed with the way the team came out an played. We just need to put this round behind us and come out focused and ready to play on Tuesday."
Leading the team portion of the tournament is fellow Conference USA school SMU (291), who carries a three-stroke advantage over Indiana (294) into round two action on Monday. UNC Greensboro and C-USA member UAB are tied for third with an 18-hole score of 298, followed by Penn State and Xavier in fifth at 301.
UNCG's Nathan Stamey posted a two-under par 70 and currently leads the individual portion of the event. Drew Allenspach (IU) and Colt Knost (SMU) are tied for second with a one-under par 71 and the trio of Brandon DeStefano (SMU), Robert Rohanna (PSU) and Josh Thompson (UAB) are tied for fourth at 72.
