GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Freshman Brooke Swann struck out a career-high eight batters and tossed her fourth shutout of the season to lead East Carolina to a 4-0 win over Buffalo here Saturday night as a part of the 2006 Pirate Invitational.
Swann (4-2) won for the fourth time in five starts this season, scattering six hits without a walk in a complete game effort.
ECU (21-15) did all of its offensive damage in the third inning, scoring four runs on three hits.
With sophomore Paige Baggett standing on second base and freshman Sara Bibee at first, freshman Vanessa Moreno delivered a one-out double to center field, scoring both runners and giving the Pirates an early 2-0 advantage.
After moving up a base on a ground ball out to the right side, Moreno scored on an errant throw by the UB shortstop, extending the lead and the inning.
Sophomore Beth Nolan then doubled to center field, scoring senior Krista Jessup, who reached on the errant throw by the shortstop, from second base.
Swann then retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth inning before working out of her second jam of the night in the sixth.
Buffalo (8-20) put a runner at third base with one out in the top of the first before Swann induced a pop up and a ground ball out to end the frame.
Back-to-back hits in the sixth, gave UB its best scoring opportunity of the night putting two runners in scoring position with only one out. Swann calmly then struck out the next two batters to keep the Bulls scoreless.
Jennifer Biernacki (0-4) was tagged with the loss for UB despite holding ECU to just three hits.
The Pirates conclude play at the 2006 Pirate Invitational with a pair of games Sunday. ECU plays No. 6 California at 1 o'clock followed by a game against Kent State at 3 p.m.
