GREENVILLE, N.C. -- UNC Wilmington's doubles sweep proved to be the difference as the Seahawks edged East Carolina 4-3 in non-conference women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Lady Pirates, who suffered just their second loss in the last seven matches, dropped to 17-8 on the season while UNCW improved its record to 18-3.
The Seahawks set the tone early as Lindsey Hess and Lauren Isenhour teamed to snap a 12-match winning streak held by the former nationally-ranked ECU doubles tandem of Gillie Bailey and Kirstin Buchanan with a 9-8 victory at the No. 1 position. UNCW followed by adding 8-1 and 8-6 wins by Katie Carlson/Cassie Martin and Kirstin Mears/Molly Molony over Anca Dumitru/Presley Thomas and Luiza Borges/Alex Smith at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, East Carolina picked up victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 flights as Bailey rallied past Molony (2-6, 6-4, 6-4), Borges defeated Isenhour (6-1, 6-3) and Thomas outlasted Carlson 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
The Seahawks used triumphs by Hess over Dumitri (6-0, 6-4) No. 1, Mears over Hannah Priest (7-6, 6-4) at No. 5 and Martin over Smith (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6 to capture the other three matches.
With Saturday's scheduled match at Charlotte cancelled because of the forecast of inclement weather, East Carolina will take a week off before closing out its regular season schedule against South Carolina State on April 15 in Greenville.
