GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina junior pitcher Keli Harrell was one of 12 student-athletes representing six different schools to comprise the 2006 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Softball Team released Thursday. It is the second straight season that she has earned all-state recognition.
Harrell was a first-team All-Conference USA player, posting 25 wins and striking out 255 batters in 255.2 innings pitched. She earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors five times, struck out 10 or more batters in a game eight times and tossed her second career no-hitter on March 26.
Atlantic 10 co-regular-season champion Charlotte led the way with five players on the squad while Southern Conference regular-season winner Western Carolina placed three players on the team. Campbell, Elon and UNC Wilmington were also represented once each on the all-state team.
The team consists of players from NCAA Division I colleges and universities throughout the state. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted nominees. NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams. The team consists of two pitchers, one catcher, four infielders, three outfielders and one designated player. All players involved with ties in the voting process are also included on the all-state squad.
Founded in 2002, the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCSSIA selects all-state teams for men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball on both the College (Division II, III, NAIA) and University (Division I) levels. More than 325 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams.
