Pirates Take Three Matches At Wolfpack Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. - Behind the play of freshman Matt Peeler, the East Carolina men's tennis squad picked up three singles wins at the 2006 Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational last weekend.
Peeler accounted for two of the victories for the Pirates, defeating High Point's Dave Perren 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16 before falling to Elon's Kevin Colin 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, during quarterfinals play. Peeler then bounced back to hand UNC-Greensboro's John William a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
Junior Henrique Viana split a pair of matches, picking up a win over Elon's Sebastian Bredberg 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the round of 32 and losing to UNC-Greensboro's Jason Steinhorn 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the Round of 16.
Junior Mike Catalano also participated in the tournament as a singles' entrant and as a doubles' partner with Peeler. The pair fell to N.C. State's Chris Welte-Jay Weinacker 8-3 in its only match of the tourney. In singles action, Catalano suffered defeats to Elon's Kyle Smialek (7-6/5, 6-1) and Campbell's Viktor Taune (6-1, 6-1).
The Pirates will return to action September 29-October 1 when they will take part in the 2006 UNC Fall Invitational at Chapel Hill.
