
Pirates Win Three Singles Matches At UNC-Wilmington Landfall Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Aleksey Kochetov defeated UNC-Wilmington's Henrique Meloni 3-6, 6-3 (5) and N.C. State's David Rozek 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Taylor Fogelman of North Carolina 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 in the final round to highlight East Carolina's participation in the season-opening Landfall Invitational.
Freshman Stephen Whitwell lost his first match of the afternoon 6-2, 6-2 to Caio Piacentini (UNC-W) but bounced back against Kevin Colin (Elon) 6-2, 6-1. Coastal Carolina's Simon Taylor ended Whitwell's run with a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 triumph in the last round of the loser's bracket.
In doubles play, Kochetov and Whitwell rebounded from an 8-3 setback to North Carolina's tandem of Fogelman-David Stone to notch a similar 8-3 win against Babar Akbar-Eric Claggett (Charleston Southern). Coastal Carolina's pair, Elliott Quibell-Taylor, handed the Pirate duo an 8-4 loss in the consolation finals.
In all, the Pirates won three singles matches and one doubles match during tourney play.
