GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kelley Wernert did not disappoint on her senior night as she put down 21 kills to lead the East Carolina volleyball team over UCF 3-0 on Friday night inside Minges Coliseum. The Pirates even their record at 14-14 overall and improve to 5-8 in conference play while the Knights fall to 9-19 on the season and remain winless in C-USA (0-13). It is the first time since a pair of wins over SMU and UCF in September that ECU has won two consecutive matches. Wernert also broke the school record for kills in a season with her third in the first frame.
With the Pirates leading 9-6 in the first game, they used a 6-0 run to assume an eight-point advantage that they would never relinquish. East Carolina outscored the Knights from that point 15-12 to coast to a 30-18 win.
After UCF took a 2-1 lead to begin the second game, the Pirates went on a 10-0 run behind the serving of Peyton Thompson to take an 11-2 advantage. 15-7 was as close as the Knights would get as ECU outscored them 15-12 for the second-straight frame to close out a 30-19 win.
The Pirates left no doubt in the final game, taking leads of 8-3, 17-6 and 26-14 on their way to a 30-14 victory.
In addition to Wernert's 21 kills, sophomore Peyton Thompson turned in 10 scores, her fourth-straight double-digit effort. Two more sophomores, Stephanie Turner and Hannah Fenker, combined for 26 digs to pace the defense. Freshman Katie Koop dished out 38 assists while compiling a smoking .8751 hitting percentage with seven kills on eight attempts with no errors. Thompson also hit an errorless game, posting a percentage of .625.
ECU dominated the stat sheet with more kills (53-27), a better hitting percentage (.394-.074) and more digs (51-33) as well as assists (41-22). Erin Campbell led the Knights with 10 kills and eight digs.
The Pirates will play their final home match of the season on Sunday as Southern Miss travels to Greenville. East Carolina looks to avenge a 3-2 defeat in Hattiesburg on Sept. 30. The conference tilt is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Minges Coliseum.
