Pirates Excel In Singles Play At Charleston Shootout

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team racked up an impressive 21-4 singles record as it competed in the Charleston Shootout against Appalachian State, Charleston Southern and the College of Charleston last weekend. The event concluded the Pirates' fall season.
Each class had one member post a 3-0 record as freshman Stephen Whitwell, sophomore Brian Oakley, junior Aleksey Kochetov and senior Henrique Viana dominated their competition. Viana won all of his matches in straight sets, topping Appalachian State's Russ Ferrari (6-3, 6-4), Charleston Southern's Thomas Mullikin (6-0, 6-1) and College of Charleston's Garrett Egan (6-3, 6-1) while Oakley dropped just one set in beating the Mountaineers' Britton Webb (6-3, 5-7, 6-2), the Buccaneers' Luis Maselli (6-4, 6-4) and the Cougars' Julio Piera (6-0, 6-2).
In doubles action, Oakley and freshman Henrik Skalmerud booked a 2-1 mark, besting Appalachian State's David Doverspike and Webb 8-6 and College of Charleston's Don Murray and Piera 8-3.
East Carolina will open its spring season in January at the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va. The tournament is scheduled for Jan. 18-19.
