CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A career day by clean-up hitter Paige Baggett lifted the Pirates over the College of Charleston 9-0 in five innings in the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill. Baggett's grand slam to right field in the 5th inning on an 0-2 pitch gave the Pirates a 9-0 lead and effectively ended the game.
Baggett gave the Pirates (3-0) an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when she hit her first of two home runs, totaling six RBI. Jessica Johnson's towering home run to centerfield in the third inning gave the Pirates a comfortable 4-0 lead with Keli Harrell pitching.
Harrell got her second start on the season for the Pirates and went the distance. She allowed three hits and struck out eight Cougars.
"Harrell was in command all day of her pitches", said associate head coach Natalie Kozlowski. "She was strong and steady through five straight innings."
Baggett has now hit three homeruns in her last two games. The Pirates as a team have hit six home runs in their last two games.
"I'm really excited with the way we have been swinging our bats," said Kozlowski. "We are hitting the ball hard and everyone is contributing from the top to the bottom of our lineup."
The Pirates will play one final game in the Carolina Classic on Sun. at 10 a.m. against Penn State. Penn State participated in regionals last season and will be the hardest test thus far for the unbeaten Pirates.
