ASHEVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina's doubles sweep proved to be the difference as the Pirates edged UNC Asheville 4-3 in non-conference men's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.
ECU, which snapped a three-match losing streak with the victory, improved to 3-3 on the year while the Bulldogs opened their spring dual match season at 0-1.
The Pirates set the tone early as Matt Peeler and Brian Walters teamed up for an 8-5 triumph over Joe May and Rob Nunnery at the No. 3 position. East Carolina followed by adding 8-6 and 9-8 (5) wins by Bryan Oakley/Stephen Whitwell and Aleksey Kochetov/Henrique Viana over Mauricio Correa/Damien Snare and Tyler Begg/Loic Hereson at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, ECU picked up victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 slots as Kochetov rallied past Hereson (1-6, 6-3, 6-4), Viana defeated Snare (6-2, 6-2) and Whitwell disposed of May 7-6 (7), 6-0.
The Bulldogs used wins by Nunnery over Peeler (7-6/5, 6-3) No. 3, Correa over Sam McSpadden (6-3, 7-5) at No. 4 and Begg over Walters (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) at No. 5 to capture the other three matches.
