HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - East Carolina capitalized on three critical Marshall errors, scoring five runs in the fourth inning to claim a 5-0 win at Dot Hicks Field.
With the victory, ECU improved to 25-10 overall and 4-2 in Conference USA. Marshall dropped to 19-14 overall and 5-4 in the league.
Senior Keli Harrell (14-5) earned the win, rebounding from Saturday's game one defeat. Harrell scattered four hits, while striking out only one Herd batter. Marshall southpaw Abigail Harter was dealt the tough loss (10-8), allowing five runs - two earned - on five hits with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
Jessica Johnson paced the Pirates at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Beth Nolan went 1-for-3 with a two-RBI single.
After three scoreless innings, East Carolina broke the deadlock with a five-run fourth inning. Johnson, who led off the inning for the Pirates, was allowed to continue her at bat after Gina Guzzo dropped a foul fly ball. Later in her at bat, she reached on a fielding error by Samantha Rodriguez, resulting in the Herd being credited with two errors on the play.
The Pirates followed with back-to-back singles before Nolan delivered a two-RBI single down the left field line for a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Cristen Aona was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring ECU's third run.
Later in the inning, Paige Baggett scored on a fielding error. East Carolina then batted around as Johnson delivered an RBI single to right field, giving the visitors a commanding 5-0 lead.
Harrell retired 10 of the final 11 batters to clinch the victory.
