Spiders Climb Past East Carolina 5-2

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond used four singles wins and the doubles point to post a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis victory over East Carolina Tuesday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
The win was the Spiders' fourth straight and improved their record to 4-6. The loss dropped the Lady Pirates to 15-8 this spring.
Richmond opened the match by capturing the doubles point as Pamela Duran and Ashlee Vosters blanked Luiza Borges and Anca Dumitru 8-0 at the No. 2 flight before Jessica Hubbard and Jelena Zivanovic handed Alex Smith and Brooke Walter an 8-4 loss at No. 3. ECU's top-seeded tandem, Mireia Gol and Varinia Soler fared a little better before falling 8-6 to Robin Carter and Beatrice Grasu.
The Spiders continued their strong play in the singles competition, winning four of six matches. Duran, ranked by Fila as the No. 68th collegiate singles player nationally, opened the action by walking past Dumitru (6-1, 6-0) at No. 1 before Carter, Vosters and Hubbard added victories over Soler (2-6, 6-4, 6-4), Walter (6-3, 1-6 <10-5>) and Smith (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 2, 4 and 5 slots, respectively.
The Lady Pirates' pair of triumphs came at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions as Gol rallied to defeat Grasu (0-6, 6-1, 6-4) and Borges rolled past Xenia Schneider (6-4, 6-2).
East Carolina will continue its five-match road swing with a stop in Charlotte Saturday to face the 49ers at 10:00 a.m.
