GREENVILLE, N.C. - Campbell rebounded from a doubles point setback with five singles wins to secure a 5-2 men's tennis non-conference victory over East Carolina Saturday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The loss was the third in the last four matches for the Pirates, who dropped their record to 7-11. The Camels improved to 12-8 on the season.
In singles play, Campbell's Gabriel Delarue cruised past Aleksey Kochetov 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 slot while Marc Sifre posted a 7-6 (3), 6-4 triumph over Matt Peeler at No. 2. Artoym Starkov followed by picking up a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at No. 3 over Stephen Whitwell before Vasja Gorjup handled Bryan Oakley (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 4 position and Sebastian Thesleff came from behind to defeat Sam McSpadden 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5.
The Pirates' only singles victory came at the No. 5 slot as Brian Walters rolled past Viktor Taune 6-3, 6-2.
East Carolina opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests to take an early 1-0 lead. Peeler and Walters paired up for an 8-2 triumph over Gorjup and Starkov at the No. 2 flight while McSpadden and Oakley handed Taune and Thesleff an 8-6 loss at No. 3.
ECU will return to action Wednesday when it will host a doubleheader against pair of different Bulldog squads in Gardner-Webb and Barton at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively.
