GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina extended its winning streak to a season-high four matches in impressive fashion Friday afternoon with a 7-0 non-conference victory over North Carolina Central at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Lady Pirates dropped just one game in 12 singles sets while posting a combined 24-1 mark in three doubles events.
The win also enabled ECU (19-8) to tie a team single-season record for victories, matching its total set last spring. In fact, since taking over the ECU women's tennis program in 1999, head coach Tom Morris has now equaled or surpassed the standard on four occasions (16 in 2003, 17 in 2005 and 19 in 2006 and 2007).
The Lady Pirates opened the match by capturing the doubles point against the Eagles (8-9). Tandems Luiza Borges and Hannah Priest, along with Zandy Overcash and Alex Smith, each rolled to 8-0 wins to clinch the first tally before Anca Dumitru and Presley Thomas closed out the action with an 8-1 decision against Comesha Hickman and Ambra Mason.
East Carolina continued its strong play in the singles competition - using 6-0, 6-0 sweeps in five of the six flights by Dumitru (No. 1), Borges (No. 2), Priest (No. 3), Smith (No. 4) and Thomas (No. 6). N.C. Central's Emily McQueen posted the Eagles' only game triumph against Overcash in a No. 5 matchup before falling 6-1, 6-0.
The Lady Pirates will close out their regular season schedule Saturday by hosting Old Dominion beginning at 1:00 p.m.
