
Softball Drops C-USA Tournament Game To UCF 3-1

ORLANDO, FLA. - Three early runs helped UCF take a 3-1 win over the East Carolina softball team Friday afternoon at the Conference USA Softball Championship. The Pirates drop to 39-19 on the season while the Golden Knights improve to 38-25. The contest marked UCF's first win over ECU as a member of C-USA.
The Golden Knights scored their first run in the second inning with one out. Breanne Javier doubled to lead off the inning and scored two batters later when pitcher Allison Kime singled to left field. UCF added two more runs in the third to push its advantage to 3-0. Lauren Dean homered to left to begin the inning. CiCi Alvarez then reached on an infield single with one out and stole second. Alvarez reached third on an infield hit by Lamb and scored on a sacrifice fly by Javier.
The Pirates put a run on the board in the bottom of the third. Christina Merrida led off the inning with an infield single. Charina Sumner then reached on a fielder's choice as Merrida was thrown out at second. After Tom grounded out to advance Sumner to second, Sumner scored on a Jessica Johnson single to provide the 3-1 final margin.
Keli Harrell threw her 21st complete game in the loss. The senior allowed three runs on seven hits and was charged with two earned runs. With her seven strikeouts, Harrell's career mark now stands at 942.
ECU will face the Golden Knights again tomorrow in an elimination game. The winner will earn a spot in the championship game against either fifth-seeded Marshall or the top seed Houston. Game time will be announced tonight at the conclusion of the Marshall-Houston contest.
