
Jessica Johnson Named To C-USA All-Academic Softball Team

IRVING, TEXAS - Sophomore Jessica Johnson has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic Softball team, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson carries a 3.62 GPA in intended merchandising. She has been named to Dean's List each semester at ECU and has earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll twice.
Johnson has started all 55 games that she has played. As the Pirates' starting first baseman, she has a fielding percentage of .990 which helps ECU rank fourth in the nation in that statistic. The California native leads the Pirates in batting average (.364), home runs (16), RBI (51), total bases (116), on-base percentage (.453) and putouts (294) while ranking second on the team in at-bats (154), hits (56), slugging percentage (.753) and walks drawn (22). Among C-USA players, Johnson sits first in home runs and total bases, second in slugging percentage and RBI, third in on-base percentage, fourth in batting average and tied for sixth in doubles.
Marshall led the way with three members on the team, while Houston, Memphis, Tulsa and UCF all placed two members on the inaugural squad. East Carolina, UAB and UTEP each had one member garner academic recognition. To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and be a starter of key reserve on their team. Six juniors, five sophomores, two seniors and one graduate student make up the 2007 All-Academic Softball team.
The 2007 C-USA Softball Championship presented by Coca-Cola gets underway on Thursday, May 10. The Pirates, as the second seed, have received a first-round bye and will take on the winner of game one between third-seeded Tulsa and six seed Memphis in the third game on Thursday at 4 p.m. There will be four more games on Friday, May 11, while the championship game will take place at 3:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, May 12 and will be televised LIVE on CSTV.
