GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jasmine Young's layup with 1.5 seconds to play lifted East Carolina to a 59-57 win over Marshall Sunday afternoon at Minges Coliseum. East Carolina, who has now won two games in a row, improves to 8-11, 2-4 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd fall to 11-9, 3-3 in league play.
After battling for the lead for most of the second half, ECU used an 8-2 run over the final three and a half minutes to defeat the Herd. Young's jumper with 2:38 to play tied the game, 55-55. ECU forced a Thundering Herd turnover on the next possession, with the opportunity to take the lead. LaCoya Terry was fouled at the 1:44 mark and hit both free throws, giving the Lady Pirates their first lead since 11:17 in the first half. With 28 seconds left, Meg Withrow hit Casey Baker for a lay-up to tie the game, but on the next possession, Young came around the baseline and connected on a lay-up that would prove to be the winning shot.
The game was close for the entirety, with neither team leading by more than six. Terry's fast break layup tied the game at 32 a-piece with 18:50 remaining in the contest. ECU extended its lead to five, 15-10, with 11:58 on the clock. Marshall fought back, going on a 7-0 run to take the two point, 17-15 advantage. The two teams traded the lead over the next several minutes, before a pair of Gabriela Husarova free throws knotted the game at 45 a piece with 23.5 seconds until the half. Withrow hit a shot as time expired to take the 30-28 lead into the break.
Terry led all scorers with 18 points, while Young chipped in 11. Terry added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals on the afternoon while Allison Spivey grabbed a game-high 11 boards. ECU shot 76.5 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-17), their best effort in league play this season, and the highest since the Georgetown win on Dec. 29. Today's game marked the first time all season that ECU did not hit a three-pointer.
The Lady Pirates hit the road once again this week, traveling to Southern Miss on Thursday, Jan. 31 and then on to UCF Saturday, Feb. 2.
