
Whitehead Homers In Purple Win, 7-4

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Trent Whitehead and Corey Thompson drove in a combined six runs to help the Purple (1-1) squad to a 7-4 win over the Black (1-1) Thursday night in game two of the Purple/Black World Series at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Patrick Somers (1-0) picked up the win going 4.2 innings where he allowed two runs (earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Joe O'Malley walked his only batter before turning the ball over to Kevin Brandt, who surrendered two runs (one earned) on one hit in 2.1 innings of work and fanned three.
Chris Heston (0-1) lasted 3.1 innings after giving up four runs (all earned) on six hits with four punch-outs and one walk. Freshman Lance Honeycutt gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 2.2 innings of work.
Whitehead, who was 2-for-4, put the Purple on the board in the bottom of the third inning when he belted a two-run shot off of junior Chris Heston to right field. Zach Wright led off the frame with a double to left field and touched home on Whitehead's first homer of the series. Dustin Harrington followed Whitehead's shot with a double to right field then took third on Brandon Henderson's groundout to second. Thompson drove in the final run of the inning on his single to right that plated Harrington.
The Purple pushed its lead to 5-0 in the fourth when Whitehead singled to left field then took second on the throw scoring Jake Davis and Kevin Brandt. Davis singled to left with one out then moved to second on Brandt's shot up the middle. Both runners moved into scoring position when Honeycutt was called for balk.
Trent Ashcraft put the Black on the board in the top of the fifth cutting the lead to 5-2. Ryan Wood singled to left with two outs then crossed home when Ashcraft doubled to left-center. Ashcraft would take third on a balk then touched home on a O'Malley wild pitch.
Link Jarrett's Purple squad answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame extending its lead to 7-2. Austin Homan singled up the middle with two outs, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Thompson's single up the middle. After Cameron Freeman walked to put runners on first and second, Davis singled up the middle plating Thompson for their final run of the contest.
Stephen Batts, who drove in two runs in game one or the Black, pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the seventh with a double to right field capping the scoring at 7-4.
Davis led all hitters with three base knocks, while Whitehead and Thompson each had two hits for the Purple. Wood, Ashcraft and Batts each had multi-hit games for the Black squad in a loosing effort.
The two teams will play the rubber-match of the series Friday night with a first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
