WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team stands tied for third-place after the first round of the Landfall Tradition, which began play Friday at the Jack Nicklaus designed course at the Country Club of Landfall (par 72, 7,028 yards). The Pirates shot 21-over as a team, but trail second-place Tulsa by only a stroke.
The University of Iowa tallied a two-under 286 and holds a 22-stroke advantage heading into the second round of competition Saturday.
ECU junior Tripp Brizendine carded an even-par 72 on the opening 18 holes and is tied with Iowa's Brad Hofinger for third place. Iowa's Vince India leads the field after shooting a four-under 68, while the Hawkeyes' Cole Peevler shot a one-under 71 to complete the round in second place.
Pirate senior Andre Thorsen stands tied for fifth place after carding a two-over 74, while sophomore Warren Straub fired a six-over 78 to land in 28th position and freshman Jake Colley shot 13-over.
Play resumes at 8:17 a.m. Saturday with the second round. Inclement weather is expected to move through the Cape Fear area most of the day before giving way to sunny skies for Sunday's final round.
