
Whitwell Leads Tennis At UNCW Invite

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team concluded fall action this past weekend at the Seahawk Fall Invitational. In total, the squad picked up 11 singles victories while also recording five doubles wins.
Junior Stephen Whitwell shone for the Pirates, winning four consecutive straight-set matches to take the championship of the B-2 fight. The Little Rock, Ark. native defeated Ronnie Sang of North Florida (6-2, 6-2), No. 1 seed Gustavo Bertei of the host team (6-1, 6-1), Alex Skinner of Boston College (6-0, 6-3) and Graham Edgar of the Ospreys (6-1, 6-4) for the title. Freshman Ryan Daly also posted a winning record, besting UNC Greensboro's Andrew Clark (6-1, 6-1) and Boston College's Michael Vann (6-4, 6-2) to post a 2-1 ledger.
In doubles action, a pair of ECU tandems scored 2-1 records as sophomore Jaroslav Horvath and senior Aleksey Kochetov teamed up to top Nicolai Nonnenbroich and Jonas Brobeck from UNC Asheville (9-8 [2]) while also defeating Andres Perez and Alejandro Espitia from NC Central (8-4). Skalmerud and sophomore David Masciorini also paired, pushing past Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor of Gardner-Webb (8-2) as well as Marcos Chiaretti and Sang from North Florida (9-7).
The Pirates will return to action on January 23 when they travel to Washington, D.C. for a dual match with George Washington.
