Pirates Handle Mount Olive, Barton

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad captured its third and fourth straight victories Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a split doubleheader with a 6-1 win against Mount Olive and a 5-1 triumph over Barton at the ECU Tennis Complex.

The pair of wins improved the Pirates' spring dual match record to 5-3 while the Trojans and Bulldogs dropped to 1-4 and 1-2, respectively.

In the opener against Mount Olive, ECU clinched the doubles point after 8-3 and 8-4 victories by tandems Aleksey Kochetov/Henrik Skalmerud and Jaroslav Horvath/Henrique Viana before taking five of six singles battles to notch the team win.

Horvath, Viana, Skalmerud, Stephen Whitwell and Matt Peeler all came out on top in singles play at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Horvath rolled past Guilherme Serra (6-2, 6-1), Viana defeated Frederico Barros (6-2, 6-1), Skalmerud dismissed Alexandre Queiros (6-2, 6-1), Whitwell handled Indradeep Mitra (6-3, 6-0) and Peeler dispatched Murilo Pelegrino (6-2, 6-2).

Mount Olive booked its only tally when Victor Lage outlasted Kochetov 1-6, 6-3, 14-12 in a No. 2 matchup.

Against Barton in the second match, threatening weather forced singles play to start the action where the Pirates quickly clinched the win by claiming five of the six flights. Horvath (No. 1), Viana (No. 2), Bryan Oakley (No. 4) and Peeler (No. 5) each produced straight-set triumphs while David Masciorini picked up a default decision at No. 6 to help ECU cruise past the Bulldogs in convincing fashion.

The Pirates will play their first road match since Jan. 19 by traveling to Buies Creek Saturday to take on Campbell. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m.
