GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team extended its season-opening winning streak to five straight with a pair of non-conference victories Saturday at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Lady Pirates opened the split doubleheader with a 6-1 triumph over Charleston Southern before closing action by blanking North Carolina A&T 7-0 in the nightcap.
While the pair of wins improved ECU's spring dual match record to 5-0, the Lady Buccaneers and Lady Aggies dropped to 0-2 and 1-6, respectively.
In the opener against Charleston Southern, East Carolina took two of three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead before capturing five of six singles battles to secure the win. Tandems Alex Smith/Brooke Walter (8-6) and Hannah Priest/Varinia Soler (8-4) each posted triumphs to help the Lady Pirates tally the doubles point while Soler, Luiza Borges, Tamara Sachs and Priest each registered straight-set singles wins at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 slots to lead East Carolina in singles play. In addition, freshman Jessica Cook notched a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Zineb Hilali at No. 1 to complete ECU's scoring.
Against North Carolina A&T in the second match, the Lady Pirates rolled to a 24-4 doubles record before following with a 72-18 singles ledger. Zandy Overcash and Sachs logged an 8-0 tandem triumph before Borges and Cook added an 8-1 victory to secure ECU's first point over N.C. A&T's Terika Palmer/Destiny Williams and Jaymee Jones/Winnie Quick. In singles play, Cook (No. 1), Walter (No. 2), Sachs (No. 3), Smith (No. 4), Overcash (No. 5) and Kristin Gordon (No. 6) each produced straight-set wins to help East Carolina cruise past the Lady Aggies in convincing fashion.
The Lady Pirates will hit the road Wednesday for a 2 p.m. match at the College of Charleston.
