GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad used a doubles sweep and wins in five of six singles matches to hand Charleston Southern a 6-1 non-conference setback and even its spring record to 3-3 Saturday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
After the Pirates' tandem of Bryan Oakley and Stephen Whitwell opened doubles play with an 8-4 defeat of Luis Maselli and Keith Whittingham at the No. 3 slot, East Carolina clinched the doubles point when Aleksey Kochetov and Henrik Skalmerud followed with an 8-5 victory over Murat Atilla and Steven Dean at No. 2. The Buccaneers' Guy David and Grega Teraz gave the Pirates' No. 1 pair, Jaroslav Horvath and Henrique Viana, a battle before falling 9-7.
In singles play, Whitwell and Oakley pushed East Carolina's lead to 3-0 with victories at the No. 6 and No. 5 positions, respectively, as Whitwell rolled past Gui Rebolo (6-1, 6-2) and Oakley dispatched Atilla (6-4, 6-3). Horvath clinched the Pirates' team win by recording a 6-2, 7-5 defeat of David at the No. 2 flight before Viana handed Teraz a 7-6 (4), 6-2 loss at No. 3 and Skalmerud rallied back to post a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Maselli at No. 4.
Dean posted Charleston Southern's (0-2) only triumph of the afternoon by defeating Kochetov in straight sets (6-3, 7-6) in a No. 1 matchup.
The Pirates will return to action Wednesday, hosting Mount Olive and Barton in a split doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
