CHARLESTON, S.C. - A convincing doubles sweep and singles victories by Henrique Viana, Stephen Whitwell and Bryan Oakley lifted East Carolina to a 4-3 non-conference win over the College of Charleston Thursday afternoon at the Patriots Point Tennis Center.
The Pirates, who extended their consecutive match win streak to six straight, improved to 11-6 on the year while the Cougars dropped to 5-7.
East Carolina set the tone early as Jaroslav Horvath and Viana teamed up for an 8-2 triumph over Ross Moyer and Joe Nicolazzi at the No. 1 position. The Pirates followed by adding similar 8-4 victories by tandems Aleksey Kochetov/Henrik Skalmerud and Oakley/Whitwell over Don Murray/Steven Myers and Mickael Boyer/Christopher Carlton at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, ECU picked up victories at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 slots as Viana dismissed Myers (6-1, 6-3), Whitwell defeated Carlton (6-2, 6-0) and Oakley disposed of Moyer (6-1, 6-3).
Charleston used wins by Omer Abramovich over Horvath (6-0, 6-1) No. 1, Boyer over Kochetov (6-4, 4-6, 10-6) at No. 2 and Nicolazzi over Skalmerud (7-6, 6-1) at No. 4 to capture the other three matches.
