PINEHURST, N.C. --- A trio of Indiana golfers fired rounds of under par to stake the Hoosiers to a 17-stroke lead at the 2008 Pinehurst Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina University and Indiana University. IU's Seth Brandon leads the event after shooting a three-under par 69, leading teammate Ren Han by a one stroke. IU's Jorge Campillo, the 2007 Pinehurst Intercollegiate individual medalist, and St. Mary's Mike McRae trail Brandon by two strokes.
Round two of the three-day, 54-hole event will be played on Monday. The tournament is being contested on the par 72, 7,035-yard Centennial Pinehurst No. 8.
Indiana carded a team score of of two-under par 286 and leads second place Ball State (303) and Virginia Commonwealth (303) by 17 strokes.
Eastern Kentucky is third (+16) followed by UNC Greensboro (+17), UNC Wilmington (+18), Western Carolina (+19), San Francisco (+20), Wisconsin (+20), St. Mary's (+21), East Carolina (+23), Toledo (+23), Penn State (+24), Marquette (+26), Marshall (+27), Miami of Ohio (+28), Hartford (+28), Western Illinois (+34) and IUPUI (+45).
Ball State's Ross Cosat, East Carolina's Markus Leandersson, and Eastern Kentucky's Justin Moore each shot par on the first 18 holes with four additional players all within five strokes of the lead.
ECU sophomore Tanner Briele and freshman Warren Straub tied for 51st with a seven-over par 79. Junior Andre Thorsen carded a nine-over par 81, while sophomore Tripp Brizendine finished at 13-over par. Freshman Matt Sterling, playing as an individual, finished at 10-over.
