GREENVILLE, N.C. - Michele Fanney and Teresa Wang's 8-5 victory over Hannah Priest and Varinia Soler in a No. 2 doubles match earned the Wildcats' opening point and eventually proved to be the difference as Davidson edged East Carolina 4-3 in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats, who extended their consecutive match win streak to three straight, improved to 11-3 on the year while the Lady Pirates fell to 12-3.
After Davidson's Virginia Berry and Kelsey Linville opened doubles play with an 8-2 win over Alex Smith and Brooke Walter at the No. 1 slot, East Carolina evened the ledger when Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol defeated Lora Dushanova and Kim Whelan 8-4 at No. 3. Priest and Soler battled back to trim the deficit to 6-5 in the No. 2 matchup before Fanney and Wang closed out the triumph to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 team lead.
In singles play, the Lady Pirates picked up victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions as Soler rolled past Berry (6-1, 7-5), Gol disposed of Fanney (6-1, 6-2) and Walter outlasted Whelan (6-4, 7-5).
The Wildcats used wins by Linville over Jessica Cook (6-2, 6-1) at No. 1, Meredith Skeeters over Borges (6-3, 6-0) at No. 5 and Wang over Priest (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6 to capture the other three matches.
East Carolina, ranked No. 73 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll, will continue its three-match homestand by hosting Richmond in non-conference action Wednesday, March 26 beginning at 2 p.m.
