Pirates Fall To Seventh At C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. - East Carolina carded a second round total of 12-over-par to dropped into a seventh place tie with UCF Monday at the 2008 Conference USA Championship. The Pirates have tallied a 36-hole total of 13-over-par (289-300=589) and trail team leader Memphis by 21 strokes entering Tuesday's final round.
Memphis remains in first place with a four-stroke lead (568, -8) after two rounds of the 2008 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship. The Tigers were three-over on the day at the par 72, 6,935-yard Texarkana Country Club on another beautiful day with temperatures in the low-80's.


ECU junior Andre Thorsen parred the course for a second consecutive day and is tied for 12th at even-par (72-72=144). Sophomore Tanner Briele shot five-over Monday and fell to 22nd at four-over (71-77=148). Freshman Warren Straub (74-75=149) and senior Anthony Reale (72-77-149) are each five-over for the championship, while Markus Leandersson is six-over (74-76=150).


UAB junior Zach Sucher registered a scorching 66 on the day for the low round of the tournament despite getting tripped up with his only bogey of the day on 16. His 134 (-10) puts him three strokes ahead going into the final round of play.


Memphis sophomore Brandon Bunn had the Tigers' low round with an even 72, while teammates Robbie Greenwell, Ian Rochester and Brad Benjamin were all one stroke behind with a 73. Seniors Greenwell and Rochester are tied for fourth in the team standings with a 141 (-3).


The Tigers took advantage of their five-stroke lead over runner-up Houston entering today, bet the Cougars were one stroke better on the day. Junior transfer Ben Moser led UH with a 71 to move him into a tie for 10th place in the individual standings at one-under. Teammate Brady Shivers is tied for fourth place with a three-under 141 after 36 holes.


Southern Miss and UAB enter the final day of competition tied for third place in the team standings. Southern Miss was even on the day with a 288 team total and was once again led by Paul Apyan. The sophomore carded a 68 Sunday and 69 today for an impressive seven-under 137 to stand in second place.


Defending champion Tulsa was also able to make a little jump to sixth place with a 588 team score. TU sophomore Rob Laird carded the second-best round of the day at 68 to move into third place in the individual standings with a 5-under 139 after 36 holes. East Carolina and UCF are tied for seventh place and just one stroke behind, while UTEP moved into ninth place with a 591 (+15). Rice and Marshall round out the standings and will play in one of the first groups tomorrow.


Tuesday's final round tees off at 7:40 a.m., CDT with teams going off both the front and back nine. The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional. Live scoring is available on www.conferenceusa.com.
