NEW ORLEANS, La. - No. 28 East Carolina dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to Houston in the an elimination game at the 2008 Entergy Conference USA Baseball Championships Friday night at Greer Field inside Turchin Stadium. With the loss the Pirates fall to 40-19 while Houston improves to 36-22.
Bryan Tully picked up the win moving to 5-3 on the year after working 5.1 innings allowing one run (earned) on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts before turning the ball over to Chase Dempsey. Dempsey recorded his 11th save of the season working the final 3.1 innings allowing one hit with a walk and three strikeouts.
Freshman Sthil Sowers (4-4) fanned a career-high seven batters in 5.1 innings of work in the loss. He allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits with two walks. Fellow classmate Seth Simmons made his 26th appearance of the year relieving Sowers in the sixth frame working 0.2 innings with two walks and a strikeout. Josh Ruhlman made his third appearance of the tournament going three innings giving up one hit while walking two and striking out one.
Harrison Eldridge wasted little time in getting the Pirates on the board, 1-0, when he took a 3-1 offering from Tully to center field to leadoff the first inning with his fifth homer of the season.
Houston pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth taking a 2-1 lead. Zak Presely's one-out triple to left field scored Jimmy Cesario, who walked to open the frame. Caleb Ramsey drove in the go-ahead run with a single to center that scored Chris Wallace, who reached on a fielder's choice.
ECU will have to wait until Monday, May 26 to see where they are headed for the NCAA Regionals.
