CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - East Carolina freshman pitcher Seth Maness was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings NCAA Atlantic Region second-team the association announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Pinehurst, N.C. native, who was named Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year, had one of the best freshman seasons in Pirate history after posting a 9-2 record with a 3.27 ERA and 81 strikeouts with just 20 walks in 98.1 pitched. Maness became just the second freshmen in ECU history to win nine games (Mickey Britt, 1977).
With his ABCA/Rawlings second-team selection, Maness is the 34th Pirate to be named to an ABCA team and the first since Brody Taylor in 2006.
The Atlantic Region was well represented at the national level, as 10 of its 13 first-team All-Region players also were named to one of the three ABCA All-America teams, including five on the first team.
Miami second baseman Jemile Weeks and starting pitcher Chris Hernandez, Florida State catcher Buster Posey, North Carolina outfielder Tim Fedroff and Georgia Southern outfielder Chris Shehan all earned first-team All-Atlantic Region honors and then took home first-team All-America laurels.
College World Series participants Miami and North Carolina highlight the All-Atlantic Region first and second Teams with five honorees apiece. Coastal Carolina followed with three recipients, while Elon, Florida State and Georgia Southern each had two.
