OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The East Carolina softball team continued to receive preseason recognition by picking up two votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, according to an announcement by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier this month, the Pirates received four votes in the NFCA/USA Today preseason ranking.
ECU is joined in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll by fellow Conference USA member Houston, which checked in at No. 16. Besides the Cougars, the Pirates are scheduled to face four other teams this season that were ranked in the preseason poll. East Carolina will travel to Alabama (No. 2) and North Carolina (No. 21), while playing a neutral site contest against Michigan (No. 5) and hosting Virginia Tech (No. 25) and the Tar Heels. ECU is also slated to play Notre Dame, another team in the receiving votes category.
The Pirates begin their season with the ECU Invitational on Feb. 7-8, squaring off against Virginia at 1 p.m. and Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. on opening day before taking on the same two foes on Feb. 8.
