SAVANNAH, Ga. - East Carolina sophomore David Watkins fired two rounds of 68 on Monday and leads by two shots after two rounds at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate at Savannah Quarters Country Club. As a team, East Carolina is in first place and leads second place Wofford by nine shots heading into Tuesday's final round.
Watkins, who stands at eight-under, leads Georgia College's Joe Young by two shots and Furman's Daniel Bowden by three.
The Pirates carded a four-under 284 in the opening round and posted an eight-under 280 in the afternoon, tying for the fourth lowest 18-hole team score in school history. ECU fired a 36-hole total of 12-under 564. Wofford bounced back from an opening round 293 to tally a second round 280 for a 573 (-3) to remain nine strokes back. Old Dominion stands even after two rounds (576) for third place and Georgia College & State University stands in fourth at 582 (+6) heading into the final round Tuesday. Georgia Southern completes the top-five at 584 (+8).
Watkins made a total of 10 birdies on the first 36 holes of competitions, while fellow Pirate Jake Colley sank 11 birdies. Colley fired a two-under 142 (72-70) and is tied for eighth place.
Freshman Michael Marshburn is tied for 11th with a one-under 143 (73-70) and sophomore Harold Varner is in 21st with a one-over 145 (71-74). Junior Warren Straub is tied for 27th at two-over (74-72=146).
The final round of competition begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
