Men's Tennis Competes At ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team continued preparations for its spring season by participating in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regionals at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Highlighting the Pirate effort was freshman Massimo Mannino, who won two matches to advance to the round of 64. The rookie defeated Zach Sprouse of Presbyterian in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the main draw where he then bested Zach Hunter from North Carolina (7-6 [1]. 7-6 [1]) before falling to Iain Atkinson of Wake Forest (7-5, 6-1).
Two additional ECU players took part in the event, as senior Bryan Oakley dropped a match to Chris Mark of Davidson (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) while junior Henrik Skalmerud could not get past Conner Sherwood from Wake Forest (7-6 [3], 6-3).
In doubles action, Oakley and Skalmerud teamed up to best Akash Gujarati and Jamie Pulgar of N.C. State (9-8 [3]) but fell to Alain Humblet and Phillip Kloc from Appalachian State, 8-4.
The Pirates wrap up fall competition Oct. 23-25, traveling to Wilmington for the UNCW Fall Tournament.
