WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team faced off against top competition in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships at Wake Forest this past week. After three wins in the singles qualifying draw, the Pirates could advance no further against a tough field of opponents.
Freshman Petra Vogel starting things off with a win over Mikayla Rogers of UNC Greensboro (7-6, 7-5) before falling to Giovanna Portioli from Winthrop (6-2, 6-3). Classmate Jillian Zhang then dispatched the Spartans' Stephanie McFarlane in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) but was stopped by Minzee Mabrey of North Carolina (6-1, 6-2). Sophomore Natalie Collins also won her first contest, a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Wake Forest's Katarina Reveche. However, she was bested by Tar Heel Haley Hemm (6-3, 6-4) in her attempt to qualify for the main draw.
In doubles action, Zhang and Collins teamed up and received a bye into the round of 32. They then met Annette Rios and Jessica Elben from UNC Greensboro, who eliminated the Pirate duo by a score of 8-4.
