GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina rallied back after dropping the doubles point to win five of six singles matches and post a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis victory over Campbell Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The triumph enabled the Lady Pirates to extend an early season winning streak to four straight and improve their record to 5-1 while the Camels fell to 5-4.
Although Ana Surviladze turned in Campbell's only singles win by outlasting Varinia Soler 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 at the No. 2 slot, East Carolina quickly gained control of the match with three early straight-set victories. Jessica Cook defeated Blanca Saenz 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1, Brooke Walter dismissed Cristina Garcia 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and Rocio Cabanillas handed Anais Gomar a 6-2, 7-5 loss at No. 5 to erase an early deficit.
Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs each needed three sets to post triumphs over Borislava Nikolova (7-5, 3-6, 6-0) and Tanya Ajuha (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
The Camels claimed a 1-0 edge, picking up the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Cook and Soler prevented the sweep however, earning an 8-3 win over Garcia and Surviladze at No. 1 to move their spring tandem record to 3-2.
East Carolina will return to the road for only the second time this season when it travels to Davidson Friday for a 2:00 p.m. match against the Wildcats.
