GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina sophomore Seth Maness (RHP) picked up his fifth preseason all-america honor after being named to the Sporting News 2009 College All-America Team.
In addition to his Sporting News honor, he has also been tabbed preseason second-team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Ping!Baseball, while taking home third-team honors from Louisville Slugger (Collegiate Baseball) and Recruitingcloser.com.
Maness' other preseason honors include: 2009 Conference USA preseason Pitcher-of-the-Year and first-team All C-USA (league's coaches), 2009 Brooks Wallace Player-of-the-Year Award Preseason Watch List (College Baseball Foundation) and first-team honors from Rivals.com.
The Pinehurst, N.C. native, who was named Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year in 2008, had one of the best freshman seasons in school history after posting a 9-2 record with a 3.27 ERA and 81 strikeouts with just 20 walks in 98.1 pitched. Maness became just the second freshman in ECU history to win nine games following Mickey Britt's 1977 season.
Maness became one of the most decorated Pirates in school history after being named to seven All-America teams, five of those coming as a freshman. He joined former Pirate greats Cory Scott (2000) and Greg Bunn (2004) as the only players in school history to be selected to at least five all-america teams in the same season.
The Pirates will open the 2009 season on Feb. 20 when they square off against Monmouth at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
