AIKEN, S.C. - Freshman David Watkins fired a three-over 73 in the final round to finish tied with senior teammate Andre Thorsen for 16th-place as the East Carolina dropped two spots and finished 10th overall at the Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Host USC Aiken claimed its third tournament title in the last four year, winning by 15 strokes over second-place Liberty. Liberty's Robert Karlson topped earned individual medalist honors by one stroke over Charleston Southern's Kelvin Day, who held first place entering the final round.
Thorsen began the day tied for ninth, but fell to 16th as he shot seven-over. Watkins moved up 11 spots with a third round total of three-over. Both players finished the tournament at 10-over.
Freshman Harold Varner carded a five-over 75 in the final round and finished two strokes behind his teammates at 12-over for the tournament.
The Pirates return to action March 27 at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
