AIKEN, S.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team carded a 589 during the first two rounds of the 12th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 70 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club on Monday. The Pirates will begin play Tuesday in eighth place, 16 strokes behind first-place USC Aiken.
Senior Andre Thorsen fired a team-low three-over 143. Thorsen shot three-over in round one before coming back to par the course the second time through and sits in ninth place, just five strokes off the lead.
Freshmen Harold Varner and David Watkins each recorded a two round total of seven-over 1777. Both players shot seven-under in one round, while shooting par during his other round. The pair is tied for 27th.
Charleston Southern's Kelvin Day is in first individually with the junior from Surrey, England carding a two-round one-under-par score of 138. Day had the low round of the day in the second round with a 66. He ended the first round with a two-over-par 72.
The third and final round of the tournament is set to commence at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10.
