HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- East Carolina held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth, but Ashley Razey's three-run home run gave Southern Miss a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Christina Merrida drove in ECU's (15-9, 3-3 C-USA) only run with a single to center that plated Angel Barrella. Toni Paisley suffered the loss in the circle and moved to 11-4 on the year.
The Pirates threatened in the top of the first, but did not score when Charina Sumner led off with a double, moved to third on Jillian Gallagher's sacrifice bunt and was left stranded.
After sending Southern Miss down in order in the bottom of the first, East Carolina used Merrida's first RBI of the season to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Barrella led off with her team-leading 16th walk of the season and Sarah Bibee singled with two outs to put runners on first and second. Merrida then hit a 2-2 pitch into center, scoring Barrella.
The Golden Eagles got a double from Megan Hill to start the bottom of the second, but Paisley retired the next three in order to keep ECU ahead 1-0.
Both teams went quietly through the next three innings, as neither was able to put more than one runner on base until the bottom of the sixth, when Southern Miss scored all three of its runs on the Razey homer. Kristin Pilgrim and Megan Hill hit back-to-back singles with two outs before Razey's home run to left field, which just stayed inside the foul pole.
The Pirates got a hit from Paisley in the top of the seventh, but that was all the offense could manage.
East Carolina heads to the field again on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game at N.C. State.
