Roller Lifts Pirates To Midweek Win, 10-9

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Kyle Roller's two-out RBI single through the left side in the ninth inning gave No. 19 East Carolina (17-4) a 10-9 win over Campbell (11-10) Tuesday night at Taylor Field.
With two outs in the ninth, the Pirates reeled off consecutive hits by Ryan Wood, Stephen Batts and Roller to regain the lead. Wood singled to right and Batts hit a line shot back up the middle that hit off pitcher Ryan Hamme to extend the frame for Roller, who finished the game going 4-for-6 with four RBI an hit his eighth home run of the season in the third inning.
Seth Simmons (1-0) picked up the win after striking out the side in the ninth. He allowed two runs on two hits with five punch outs. Sthil Sowers lasted 4 2/3 innings in the start giving up seven runs on six hits. Bailey Daniels went 1 1/3 innings allowing three hits and two walks.
Hamme dropped to 2-3 on the season after working the final 1 2/3 frames where he allowed two runs on four hits. Logan Davis lasted 1 2/3 innings in the start giving up two runs on three hits. The Camels used three pitchers to bridge the game to Hamme.
Roller put the Pirates up 1-0 in the top of the first on a two-out double to left-center that scored Stephen Batts from second. Batts reached on an infield single then moved into scoring position on a Davis wild pitch.
Ryan Wood drew a bases loaded walk to put ECU up 2-0 in the second inning pushing across Dustin Harrington, who drew a one-out walk. Zach Wright moved Harrington to second on a single to left field then Trent Whitehead loaded the bases for Wood's 19th walk of the season and 120th of his career.
Roller hit his eighth home run of the season in the third inning to give ECU a 3-0 lead.
Campbell put up six runs in the bottom of the third taking a 6-3 lead thanks to three hits and a pair of walks and two hit batters. Chris Bangi reached when he was plunked by Sowers, then after a Camel strikeout, D.J. Johnson reached when he was hit by a pitch. Ryan Hamme followed when he reached on a fielder's choice that scored Bangi from second due to a Harrington error. Ellis Lowe loaded the bases with a walk before Zach Johnson singled through the left side scoring D.J. Johnson.
Alex Aycoth put the Camels up 4-3 with his double down the right field line that pushed across Hamme and Lowe. Zach Johnson scored on a wild pitch while Aycoth advanced to third during Brian Gana's at-bat, where he would eventually strikeout. The final run came on Bangi's infield single scoring Aycoth.
Trent Whitehead cut into the Camels lead in the fourth, 6-4, with a double down the left field line scoring Devin Harris, who walked to start the frame.
Another bases loaded walk plated a run for the Camels giving them a 7-4 lead in the fifth frame. With two outs, Gana and Matt Keen recorded back-to-back singles just before Bangi walked to load the bases. After a Pirate pitching change, Bryan Braswell drew another Campbell walk to push the lead to three.
The Pirates used three hits and a Campbell error to knot the game at seven in the sixth frame. Harris led the frame with his third hit of the game, a single to left then advanced to third when Zach Wright reached on a throwing error and ended up on second base with no outs. Whitehead drove in his second run of the game with a single to left pushing across Harris putting runners on first and third. Wright crossed home and Whitehead moved to second on a Floyd wild pitch closing the score to 7-6. Brandon Henderson picked a great time to collect his first hit of the game when he roped a two-out double down the left field line scoring Whitehead.
Wood drove in the go ahead run, 8-7, on a bases loaded fielder's choice that scored Harrington from third in the seventh inning. Harrington singled to start the frame then took third on Harris' third hit of the game, a double to right center. Jarred Avchen loaded the bases with a pinch hit walk before Campbell recorded the first out of the inning, a Whitehead strikeout.
Campbell took a 9-8 lead in the eighth thanks to a pair of two-out runs. Gana drove in the tying run with single to left that scored Hamme from second base. Aycoth scored the go ahead run when Keen reached on an ECU throwing error.
The Pirates will be back in action Wednesday night when they play host to No. 26 UNC Wilmington with a 6 p.m. first pitch scheduled.
