
Lady Pirates Fall To Richmond, 6-1

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond used a doubles point and five straight-set singles wins to post a 6-1 non-conference victory over East Carolina at the Westhampton Tennis Complex Tuesday afternoon, handing the Lady Pirates' their second-straight setback.
With the victory, the Spiders improved to 12-3 while ECU dropped to 10-5.
Richmond, which has captured wins in six of its last eight matchups, took an early 1-0 advantage after sweeping doubles play. Erin Clark and Ashlee Vosters rolled past Natalie Collins and Jessica Cook by an 8-3 count at No. 1, while Isabel Arana and Pamela Duran knocked off Rocio Cabanillas and Brooke Walter by a score of 8-2 at No. 2. Helen Cunningham and Kelly Tidwell closed out the pairs action for the Spiders with an 8-4 triumph over Kristin Gordon and Tamara Sachs in a No. 3 battle.
Vosters opened the singles segment by blanking Gordon 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, while Joanna Matuszczyk tallied a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sachs at the No. 5 slot.
At No. 1, Duran clinched Richmond's team win when she downed Cook 6-2, 6-1 before Tidwell and Cunningham added similar 6-3, 6-2 victories over Walter and Cabanillas at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
Collins tallied ECU's only triumph of the afternoon by rallying past Clark 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 in a No. 2 meeting.
East Carolina's road match against Liberty, scheduled for noon Wednesday, has been cancelled because of the forecast of rain. The Lady Pirates will return to action Friday when they host Presbyterian beginning at 2:00 p.m.
