Rain Forces Suspension Of Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. -- Persistent rains and standing water forced the suspension of the opening round of the 40th Annual Furman Intercollegiate men's golf tournament shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Friday with 11 teams yet to complete 18 holes at the par-72 Furman University Golf Course.
East Carolina, teeing off in the morning wave, completed the the first round with a score of 298 and is in the clubhouse in second place. The University of North Florida is the current leader at 296.
The tournament began at 8 a.m. on Friday, but was delayed by standing water in the fairways and on several greens at 12:45 p.m. Play resumed at 3:25 p.m. before being suspended at 6 p.m.
First round play is scheduled to resume on Saturday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. The second round, originally slated for Saturday, will be played following the completion of round one if weather permits. Forecasts on Friday evening are calling for heavy rains and severe thunderstorms with the chance of hail in the Greenville, S.C., area on Saturday afternoon. Final round action is set for Sunday morning.
