GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad posted straight-set victories in five of six singles matches and earned the doubles point to post a convincing 7-0 non-conference victory over North Carolina Central Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
ECU's top-seeded singles player, Jaroslav Horvath, set the tone by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jose Fabara, while Stephen Whitwell added a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Jack Waissen at the No. 2 slot. No. 3 seed Henrik Skalmerud followed by rallying for a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 victory over Andres Perez.
Additionally, the Pirates turned in singles tallies at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions as Denis Ermilov cruised past Alejandro Espitia (6-1, 6-1), Bryan Oakley defeated Trey Chatman (6-1, 6-2) and David Masciorini blanked Jermaine Byrd (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles action, Ermilov and Horvath teamed up for an 8-4 win in the No. 1 spot over Espitia and Waissen, Kochetov and Skalmerud handed Chatman and Fabara an 8-6 setback at No. 2, while Oakley and Whitwell dismissed defeated Stephen Allsop and Perez 8-1 at No. 3
The Pirates (18-3) will close out their regular season schedule Saturday by hosting UNC Wilmington and Barton College in a split doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. before preparing for the C-USA Men's Tennis Championships April 17-19 in Orlando, Fla.
