ECU Finishes Ninth At River Landing

WALLACE, N.C. --- East Carolina finished ninth at the 2009 River Landing Intercollegiate with a 17-over 221 (288-303-290) Saturday. The Pirates had the third-lowest score among the five Conference USA schools participating.
Duke captured the team title with a 53-hole score of 14-under 850 (290-280-280) followed by NC State with an eight-under 856 (278-2985-293). Wake Forest finished in third place with a four-under 860 (286-288-286) with Michigan claiming fourth place with a final tally of two-under 862 (289-288-285) and Virginia Tech placing fifth at even-par (219-290-283=864).
Tulsa led the field of Conference USA contenders with a one-over 865 (284-295-286) in sixth place. Memphis finished in 13th with a 13-over 877 (295-299-283) with Houston placing 12th with a score of 30-over 894 (297-306-291) and Rice finishing one stroke behind its cross-town rival in 13th with a final total of 895 (299-303-293).
Individual medalist honors went to N.C State's Matt Hill (67-71-68=206), who won the tournament by four strokes over Duke's Matthew Pierce (70-69-71=210). Hill shot four-under Saturday after shooting six-under in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Warren Straub (74-74-71=219) and freshman Jake Colley (72-74-73=219) recorded the lowest scores of the tournament by a Pirate golfer. Both finished at three-over and tied for 31st. Senior Markus Leandersson (73-76-71=220) shot four-over and tied for 31st with freshman David Watkins (69-79-75=223) carding a three-round total of seven over.
The Pirates return to links April 19 at the 2009 Conference USA Championship tournament in Orlando, Fla.
