WALLACE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team sits in eighth place after two rounds of competition at the 2009 River Landing Intercollegiate. The Pirates shot 15-over (288-303=591) Friday, 28 strokes behind team leader N.C. State, which shot 13-under (278-285=563).
Duke is in second place at six-under (290-280=570), followed by Wake Forest in third place at two-under (286-288=574) and Michigan in fourth at one-over (289-288=577).
ECU is one of five Conference USA teams competing in the River Landing Invitational this weekend and only Tulsa, which is in fifth place at three-over (284-295=579), had a lower score among the C-USA brethren. Memphis is tied with Virginia for ninth at 18-over (295-299=594), while Rice is 13th at 26-over followed by Houston in 14th at 27-over (297-306=603).
N.C. State sophomore Matt Hill holds the individual lead after two rounds, as he holds a one-stroke lead entering Saturday's final round. Hill finished Friday at six-under (67-71=138).
Duke's Matthew Pierce is in second place at five-under (70-69=139) followed by a trio of players at four-under. A total of 19 players shot par or better and are within six strokes of the lead.
ECU's top performer was freshman Jake Colley, who fired a two-over 146 (72-74) to grab a share of 29th place. Sophomore Warren Straub (74-74=148) and freshman David Watkins (69-79=148) each shot four-over. Senior Markus Leandersson (73-76=149) is one stroke behind his teammates at five-over.
Final round action will begin Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m.
