Pirates Finish Sixth At C-USA Championship

SORRENTO, Fla. --- East Carolina finished in sixth-place at the 2009 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship with an 11-over 875 (289-291-295).
UCF claimed the team title with a final tally of 17-uner 847 (279-286-282). The Knights finished five stokes ahead of second-place SMU (284-285-283=852) and 14 strokes in front of third-place UAB (286-287-288=861).
Pirate senior Markus Leandersson carded a three-under 69 on the final 18 holes to finish in eighth place at three-under 213 (72-72-69). Fellow senior Andre Thorsen shot two-under Tuesday to finish tied for ninth at two-under 214 (72-72-70).
UCF's Simon Ward claimed individual medalist honors with an 11-under 205 (69-68-68). Ward recorded a final round total of four-under 68 to edge out his teammate, Blayne Barber, by two strokes. Barber carded a two-under 70 Tuesday to complete the championship event as nine-under 207 (68-69-70).
ECU sophomore Warren Straub finished tied for 34th at eight-over 224 (76-71-77). Freshman David Watkins completed his first Conference USA Championship tied for 38th at 11-over 227 (72-76-79), while rookie Jake Colley tied for 43rd at 14-over 230 (73-77-80).
The Pirates will conclude their season this weekend at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va.
