GREENVILLE, N.C. - No. 24 East Carolina and Southern Miss split a day-night doubleheader Saturday in Conference USA action with the Pirates (32-13, 12-6) taking a 13-5 win in game one and the Golden Eagles (26-17, 10-8) winning game two 2-1 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates finished the week going 4-1 getting wins over No. 27 Elon (10-9), No. 1 North Carolina (4-0) and taking a pair of games from Southern Miss (7-6 and 13-5). Drew Schieber led the team with .389 (7-for-18) hitting his fifth homer of the season and driving in five RBI. Kyle Roller each had a pair of home runs on the week and Roller drove in a team-best six runs.
On the mound, freshman Kevin Brandt worked a season-high 8 1/3 innings allowing five hits with 10 strikeouts to improve to 6-1, while Seth Maness recorded his fifth win of the season against Southern Miss in game one of the doubleheader going 7 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Game Two Recap:
Both starting pitchers were in a zone Saturday night as Todd McInnis allowed just five baserunners through 7 2/3 innings, while Brad Mincey carried a no-hitter through four innings also allowing just five base runners.
McInnis (6-3) was phenomenal on the mound holding the Pirates offense to just two hits in 7 2/3 innings while fanning eight and walking to for his sixth win of the year. Wade Weathers faced one batter allowing a hit before Collin Cargill toed the rubber for his seventh save of the season after 1 1/3 innings of relief surrendering one run on two hits.
Mincey (7-4) suffered his third consecutive loss as a starter allowing two runs on two hits with five punch outs and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. A quartet of Pirate hurlers shutout the Golden Eagles over the final 3 2/3 frames giving up just four hits and striking out four.
Bo Davis pushed across the first run of the game in the first on a sac fly to center that scored Taylor Walker, who walked to start the game and moved to third on Ryan Wood fielding error.
B.A. Vollmuth broke up Brad Mincey's no-hitter in the top of the fifth on his first career home run, a shot to right field, pushing the Golden Eagles lead to 2-0.
Stephen Batts finally got the Pirates on the board in the bottom of the night when he took a Cargill two-out first pitch offering to right field cutting the lead to 2-1.
Game One Recap:
ECU used an eight-run fifth inning to take game one of the day-night doubleheader 13-5, while taking the C-USA series against Southern Miss.
The Pirates collected six hits in the fifth and got home runs from Stephen Batts (solo), Drew Schieber (3-run) and Kyle Roller (2-run) to extend their lead to 12-4.
Seth Maness (6-0) picked up his sixth win of the season after going 7 2/3 innings where he allowed four runs on 10 hits and fanned seven Golden Eagles. Mark Wilder made his first C-USA appearance facing two batters and recording one out before handing the ball to Britton Cole, who worked the ninth giving up one run on one hit with a walk.
Kyle Lindsey (3-3) surrendered 11 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings for his third loss of the season. Cody Schalagel pitched the final 3 1/3 innings allowing just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
In a game that had four lead changes and three ties, ECU struck early in the first on Batts' two-out single to left putting the Pirates up 1-0. Trent Whitehead singled up the middle to start the frame and moved to third when Roller reached on an error before touching home on Batts' 37th RBI of the season.
Joey Archer knotted the game at one in the top half of the second inning on a single to left that plated James Ewing, who singled through the right side to start the frame. Ewing promptly stole second then moved to second on Kameron Brunty's single before scoring on Archer's 44th base knock of the season.
ECU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second taking a 3-1 lead. Dustin Harrington reached on an error and Schieber singled through the right side before Jared Avchen moved them up 90 feet when he grounded out to the pitcher. Whitehead drove in the first run when he grounded out to second scoring Harrington. Schieber, who moved to third on Whitehead's grounder, scored the second run of the frame on a Lindsey wild pitch to cap the scoring.
Archer hit his seventh home run of the season in the fourth tying the game at three. Corey Stevens reached on a fielder's choice just before crossing home on Archer's second hit of the game.
Whitehead smacked his fourth home run of the season when he took a Lindsey 1-0 offering down the right field line, putting ECU back up 4-3.
With one swing of the bat, Southern Miss shortstop tied the game at four on his third homer of the year to left field to start the fifth frame before ECU exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 12-4 lead.
ECU would add a run in the eighth when Zach Wright doubled down the left field line scoring Austin Homan, while the Golden Eagles pushed one across of their own in the top of the ninth thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Kyle Maxie to cap the scoring at 13-5.
The Pirates will be back on the diamond Tuesday night when they travel to Elon for a 7 p.m. contest.
