
Brandt Named C-USA Pitcher-of-the-Week

IRVING, Texas - East Carolina freshman Kevin Brandt was named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week the league office announced Monday morning. Brandt is the third Pirate hurler to receive the weekly honors and is the fifth Pirate to be honored by the league this season for their play on the diamond.
The left-hander from Fuquay Varina, N.C. picked up his sixth win of the season after tossing 8.1 scoreless innings against No. 1 North Carolina on April 22. He allowed five hits and fanned a career-best 10 Tar Heels and retired 21-of-23 hitters from the last out in the first inning to the second out in the eighth, including 11 in a row. Brandt struck out 8-of-9 Tar Heel starters at least once and extended his current scoreless streak to 20 2/3 innings, which dates back to April 12 against Rice. In his last five outings (Rice, N.C. State, Tulane, North Carolina and Southern Miss) he has allowed 11 hits and fanned 15 with no runs.
This season against North Carolina, Brandt extended his scoreless streak to 10 innings where he has fanned 13 and allowed just six hits. The Pirates have recorded three shutouts (UNCW, N.C. State and North Carolina) on the season and Brandt has pitched in all three making a pair of starts (N.C. State and North Carolina) and working 1.2 innings in relief against the Seahawks.
Brandt joins Stephen Batts (Feb. 23 & Mar. 9), Kyle Roller (Mar. 23), Brad Mincey (Mar. 30) and Seth Maness (Apr. 13) as 2009 C-USA Players-of-the-Week.
The Pirates will be back on the field Tuesday, April 28 when they travel to Burlington, N.C. to face off against Elon with a first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. (EDT).
