GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina carded a three-over 291 Friday to assume the lead following the conclusion of the opening round of the 2009 Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate being played at the par-72, 7,102-yard Ironwood Golf and Country Club. The Pirates lead second-place Newberry, who fired a 12-over 300, by nine strokes.
Teams competed under windy conditions with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour (mph).
Rhode Island's Taylor Fontaine is the leader after one round with a score of six-under (32-34=66). ECU senior Markus Leandersson (38-33=71) and freshman David Watkins (36-35=71) are tied for second place at one-under. Four players shot par Friday with an additional six players shooting one-over.
ECU freshman Harold Varner is among those tied for eighth at one-over (73), while senior Andre Thorsen is one stroke behind his rookie teammate at two-over (74). Freshman Jake Colley is tied for 18th at three-over (75).
The second round of the 54-hole tournament is scheduled to tee-off Saturday, April 4, at 7:30 a.m. The Pirates, who will be playing with Newberry and Rhode Island, will tee-off at 11:24 a.m.
