LUBBOCK, Texas - East Carolina freshman Kevin Brandt was named to the College Baseball Foundation and Diamond Sports National All-Star Lineup this week the organization announced Thursday.
Brandt, who was named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week, picked up his sixth win of the season after tossing 8.1 scoreless innings against No. 1 North Carolina on April 22. He allowed five hits and fanned a career-best 10 Tar Heels and retired 21-of-23 hitters from the last out in the first inning to the second out in the eighth, including 11 in a row. Brandt struck out 8-of-9 Tar Heel starters at least once and extended his current scoreless streak to 20 2/3 innings, which dates back to April 12 against Rice. In his last five outings (Rice, N.C. State, Tulane, North Carolina and Southern Miss) he has allowed 11 hits and fanned 15 with no runs.
This season against North Carolina, Brandt extended his scoreless streak to 10 innings where he has fanned 13 and allowed just six hits. The Pirates have recorded three shutouts (UNCW, N.C. State and North Carolina) on the season and Brandt has pitched in all three making a pair of starts (N.C. State and North Carolina) and working 1.2 innings in relief against the Seahawks.
The left-hander from Fuquay Varina, N.C. is the third Pirate to be named to the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star lineup this season following Kyle Roller (Mar. 25) and Seth Maness (Apr. 16) selections. Back in 2007, four Pirates (T.J. Hose - Mar. 12, Shane Mathews - Mar. 19, Dale Mollenhauer - Mar. 19 and Harrison Eldridge - Mar. 27) all received the national weekly honor.
ECU will be back in action Friday night when they play host to Louisiana Lafayette in non-conference action with a first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. (EDT).
